On 9th October 2012, Uganda will mark its 50 years of Independence.

Uganda became a British colony at the end of the 19th century but gained its independence in 1962. Although the British influence is still evident today, Uganda has managed to transform itself into a peaceful, stable and prosperous country within the last 30 years.

In commemoration of this landmark achievement, the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage is organizing various events to highlight the Jubilee Celebrations. These include among others "Sights of Uganda" Photo Competition, a nationwide tree planting exercise, the launch of the Seven Wonders of Uganda and of course an extensive celebration of the World Tourism Day that was held on 27th September.

In August 2012, Great Lakes Safaris was voted the Number 1 brand in the Tourism Category of the Uganda's Top 50 Brands Awards.

Under the theme "Proudly Uganda Campaign" the Private Sector Foundation Uganda awarded the Top 50 brands of the country, as part of Uganda's Golden Jubilee celebrations towards Independence. The awarded brands were recognized for their great service and demonstrating superior business performance in Uganda.

We would like to thank everyone who voted Great Lakes Safaris as one of the Top 50 brands and contributed to this great achievement. In addition, we would like to congratulate Marasa Africa and Geolodges who also carried a flag for Tourism. We look forward to continue working with you to sustain and consistently build on this memorable milestone!

There are only a few places in the world where you can travel from dry savannah plains and tropical temperatures to snow capped mountains. And Uganda is one of them!

Rwenzori MountainsThe Rwenzoris, also known as the fabled Mountains of the Moon, lie in the west of the country. The equatorial snow peaks include the third highest point in Africa and were recently voted by National Geographic as the World's best hiking places. Unfortunately though, the mountain range is often passed unnoticed.

For this reason, USAID-STAR together with Ecotrust, Uganda Wildlife Authority and Geolodges have started a partnership to promote this incredible destination. The new developments include:

A new Rwenzori Mountains Visitor Information Centre with detailed information about the mountains, including a restaurant, craft shop and briefing room.

A new upmarket lodge called Equator Snow Lodge located along the Mubuku River and offering spectacular views of the mountains.Equator Snow Lodge

A new hiking trail Mahoma Nature Trail that makes the park more accessible for not just climbers but especially hikers, and allows visitors to experience the destination in 1 to 3 days hikes.

For more details and enquiries click here for a detailed press release or contact us! We hope to welcome you soon in the Mountains of the Moon!

Being voted as one of the strongest brands of the country, Great Lakes Safaris intends to strengthen its services by a new and improved website.

Soon an even more attractive and user-friendly website will be launched for you, complete with a new design, new features and interactive content.

So continue watching and be the first one to let us know what you think!

Unfortunately we currently do not have any guaranteed permits on offer. However, with 9 habituated gorilla families living in Bwindi National Park - and one more to be opened soon! - you are almost ensured of available permits on your preferred tracking date.

If you are interested in tracking the gorillas, do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to check for you the current availability. Permits can be booked in combination with a tour to other national parks, completely adapted to your wishes. But book early as competition is high!

In August 2012, Elisa Alonso traveled with a group of seven friends to Uganda and visited the highlights of the country. This is what they say about their trip:

"I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you. We had a fantastic trip, everything was just perfect, and mainly because of the Great Lakes Safaris staff.

Uganda is an amazing country, really beautiful and with a lot of things to offer. People are incredibly helpful, friendly and kind. For most of us, it was the best trip we have ever done. Furthermore, Ben was a fantastic guide, a really nice person that helped us so much in this wonderful trip! Thank you for your patience and for making this trip so good. We will recommend Uganda and Great Lakes Safaris to all our family and friends!"
