Meet our Staff
Amos Wekesa – CEO
Amos Masaba Wekesa, is the founder of Great Lakes Safaris and Uganda Lodges Limited. Born and raised in Eastern Uganda under the guardianship of a Scottish lady, Joan Linanker, in the Salvation Army Home for less privileged children. He has an inspiring and humbling background that reflects the person he is today, a God fearing and honest leader.
He registered and opened the doors of Great Lakes Safaris in 2001 and our most defining break when an adulatory article was published on the 23rd November, 2002 in the Washington Times by Tom Carter. The rest is history!
This is what Amos has to say:
“My passion is tourism. Shakespeare once said “Every player has a part to play”, it has become abundantly clear that through the various experiences, challenges and blessings, my destiny lies in tourism. The tourism of Uganda where I hail from has yet to be fully realized. As an advocate and tourism lobbyist, I invite you to what Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred to as “The Pearl of Africa”. I remember a client who left my country with drops of tears coming off her face, mesmerized at the incredible beauty of Uganda. Come and check it out for yourself – you will believe what I am saying… Karibuni!”
Amy Wekesa – Director
“I came to Uganda in 2001 as a Christian missionary and it quickly felt like home. Originally from the US, I graduated with a degree in Sociology at Western Washington University. My career path changed, and Great Lakes Safaris became a family business when Amos and I married in 2003. It has been exciting to see the company grow from being in our garage at home to what it is now. We have built a reputation over time by maintaining a consistently high level of customer service. It is a pleasure to work with a professional and dedicated team who work hard to ensure that each client has the optimal safari experience. Uganda’s natural beauty, the friendliness of its people, the richness of culture, and near-perfect weather make it an unforgettable place to visit – or stay!”
Sheila Kogo-Malinga – Human Resource Manager
“I have a strong Human Resources and Marketing background supported with my Master Degree in Business Management (specializing on Human Resources Management) and a Bachelor Degree in Marketing Management, both completed at Oxford Brookes University.
It is a pleasure to work with such a vibrant, passionate and warm workforce at Great Lakes Safaris. We work as team all round to ensure your experience is unmatched. I genuinely believe a happy workforce directly translates into happy clients/guests.
I hope you will give us an opportunity to ‘wow’ you with our excellent variety of services and show off our well- trained staff…ensuring ‘your journey into the wild’ exceeds your expectations and leaves you only yearning more of Uganda, the Pearl of Africa.”
Sarah Nandi – Reservations & Sales Officer
“I am a people person who enjoys meeting and working with a lot of different people from diverse cultures and I also enjoy solving problems, troubleshooting issues, and coming up with solutions in a timely manner.
My country is the land of freedom and it has the true meaning of beauty, come experience lots of birds with different colours and sounds of music, beautiful hills, waters and wildlife. Me and my country together we stand divided we shall fall. Everyone come meet your dreams in Uganda the land that speaks for itself!”
Nicholas Kasirye – Reservations and Sales Officer
“My names are Nick Kasirye. Born and raised in Kampala to Ugandan father and Kenyan mother. I joined Great Lakes Safaris as an intern in November 2013 and became a full time employee in March 2014. I initially studied Procurement and Logistics in Makerere University, but have found my way into tourism now.
I have no regrets about working in the tourism sector as I find it exciting and I get to learn new things every day. Travelling is one of the many perks I have come to enjoy working here, being one of my hobbies. Uganda is truly one of the undiscovered wonders of the world. From the flora to the fauna, to the beautiful sights and people, everything is simply amazing. I work with a great team who inspire me to be better each and every day. If you don’t believe me, drop by and see for yourself.”
Great Lakes Safari Guides
An experienced and dedicated team of drivers and safari guides has always been one of Great Lakes Safaris’ biggest assets. This young and energetic team, born and raised in different parts of the country, brings working experience from various business areas. Some of them have a long history with the company, others joined Great Lakes Safaris only a year ago.
But they also have a lot in common. Each of them is dedicated to conservation and committed to their work as a safari guide. With detailed knowledge of flora and fauna, excellent driving skills, flexibility and a generous smile, you will be welcomed and guided around the Pearl of Africa. They will share their knowledge with openness and a touch of humour. Personal memories of your safari are created when showing you a hidden viewpoint, teaching you a local song or telling you a typical story.
And at the end of your safari, you will find that they have not only been an excellent tour guide but have become a dear friend as well!
“We hope to see you soon in Uganda!”
